[Support Class] Tectus Vacca

on Mon Dec 30, 2013 1:41 pm

The Tectus Vacca, aka the Hidden Cow, is the workhorse of the Blacktron fleet. Its enormous cargo bay, enclosed in the circular cylinder which emulates its namesake's stomach. This cargo bay can carry anything from fuel to people, although Tectus Vacca's which contain fuel often have modified bays to allow for better fuel transfers between ships.

Most people, upon examining the ship would wonder where the thrusters are. However, this is the genius of the Bytetron science division. They have created an entirely new type of propulsion, one which is adequate for medium to large ships, although it cannot be used on supercruisers, which this ship is designed to fuel up. This new type of propulsion is called the Darkouus Field, and is, essentially, a portable gravity field. It allows the ship to 'fall' toward any direction using the mass of an enormous planet, far off in another solar system. In order to use this planet's mass to propel the ship in the direction intended, a rift in space-time is created, similar to the way wormholes function. The rift in space-time is always just ahead of the ship in whatever direction it is moving, thus accelerating it. These space-time rifts are mainly used to move the ship outside of FTL travel, e.g, when the fleet is heading into or from planetary orbit. Otherwise, the ship travels via wormholes generated either by letting the space-time rift generated by the Darkouus Field remain in place, rather than letting the ship be attracted to it. A diagram may be helpful.

    O ~-----------------------------------------------~ <==|

The 'O' represents the planet, with its enormous gravitational pull(hereforth known as GP) The '~''s represent space-time rifts, which allow the GP to act on the ship, shown here as the '<==|'. Finally, the '-''s represent the fictional wormhole 'tunnel' persay. The space-time rifts always stays just ahead of the ship, as it is generated by the Darkouus Field, which is part of the ship. When the ship is going to enable FTL travel, the diagram stays the same until the last moment, when the space-time rift is changed to the desired location, the momentum of the ship then causes it to be accelerated through the space-time rift, and the ship has been moved.

For the lazy people who cannot be bothered to read such an important, but long, message, it can be summarized as follows:
The Tectus Vacca is COMPLETELY wormhole powered, there is no need for any other type of thrust or fuel for non-FTL travel. This eliminates the need for fuel, and allows the Tectus Vacca to be the perfect Support Class ship.

An image of the Darkouus Field can be seen below. There are three Darkouus Field generators in the picture, shown by the "red gems".

Kewl. I love how bulky this ship is, it speaks of her mission type. The propulsion is fascinating... It sounds SIMILAR to some other methods (EG, warp, but warp is all about warping space time instead of interacting with gravitational forces. Or wormholes, which again, don't use gravity.) I wonder at the effectiveness of this propulsion system as it requires an enormous amount of power to generate a wormhole, and yet gravity is not THAT powerful. Although, if you already have the means to generate wormholes, I suppose it would greatly reduce sublight fuel requirements, at the cost of the reactor fuel. Unless it's powered by a self-sustaining source of energy, EG, an Omega molecule.... most interesting.... a very unique way of moving a ship from point A to point B...... very interesting indeed.

The ship itself looks pretty sweet. I've already commented on the propulsion technology, so that aside. It's pretty cool. Efficient use of space, but still different-style looking for a different race, mostly with the arched bridge. Pretty sweet. Other than no weapons, I'm not really sure what to say.... Razz

It's generally just an escort to supercruisers, so its not really used in direct combat situations.
Though that does give a good idea for a story. Razz

Well generally any escort, espeically in the PCG-verse where literally anywhere can be attacked, needs weapons.

What purpose does an escort serve if not to protect? A fuel/cargo support ship I could see (not in the weapon obsessed PCG mind you Razz ) without weapons, but an escort is kinda supposed to offer added protection. Wait... you're not really on great terms with the PCG... Please do leave your ships without weapons. Razz

I'm actually slightly confused by what you guys are telling me.
I thought that shields were generated in an oblong(or at least circular) field around the ship.
With a ship like a supercruiser, the shields are extended quite a distance, correct?
This means that ships like the Tectus Vacca can stay close to the supercruiser, and are only in danger if the supercruiser's shields fail. Razz

Well, sometimes yes the shields do that and sometimes no they fit the ship, it depends. Razz Though the Tectus Vacca is a resupply ship correct? Then it'll have to leave the super-cruiser.
