PPT Military Overview Empty PPT Military Overview

Sun Jul 28, 2013 3:48 pm
I bet Kojan is the only one who'll enjoy all this, and dino and kojan are the only ones who'll read all of it. No one else enjoys pure logistics like us two/three. Razz

The PPT Military is organized a little different than most militaries. There are only two basic branches, the Navy, consisting of the ships that roam the stars, and the Army, those who roam the planets. Each branch is broken down into two subsequent sub-branches. The Navy includes the Fleets and the Marines, who are specialized troops stationed aboard the Fleets' ships. The Army is broken down into the infantry, the mechanized forces, which include vehicles, aircraft, and water-borne craft. The Navy also includes it's own set of spacefighters (or "star"fighters). Many aircraft have limited space capabilities, as do many starfighters have certain atmospheric capabilities.

The Infantry is a highly organized body of troops based on the infantryman. Though seeminly useless in advanced warfare to have an entire organization comprised mainly of infantry, the PPT are advanced and highly trained enough that even without vehicles, infantry are a formidable force anywhere, and can be much easier to use than vehicles in certain cases. When you need simple boots on the ground, it helps to have an organization centered around infantry and not intermingled with mechanized forces. That said, the Infantry still have several mechanized forces for support rather than rely on the Mechanized sub-branch. The Infantry breakdown is as follows:

<> 1 Army = 5 Corps = 5,000,000 infantrymen
<> 1 Corps = 5 Divisions = 1,000,000 infantrymen
<> 1 Division = 4 Brigades = 200,000 infantrymen
<> 1 Brigade = 5 Regiments = 50,000 infantrymen
<> 1 Regiment = 5 Battallions = 10,000 infantrymen
<> 1 Battallion = 4 Companies = 2,000 infantrymen
<> 1 Company = 5 Platoons = 500 infantrymen
<> 1 Platoon = 5 Squads = 100 infantrymen
<> 1 Squad = 4 Fireteams = 20 infantrymen
<> 1 Fireteam = 5 infantrymen

These numbers are strictly fighting purposed men. Additional logistics and mechanized support are not factored in. However, with the low population of Atnlays in the galaxy, troops often double for logistics, command, communications, supply, mechanized, etcetera support, rotating in and out with other groups between campaigns. Battallion and upwards also have an extra man at the head of their unit who is that unit's leader, as the number of men under their command is simply too large to be in actual combat. Company leaders and down are still attached to a fire-team and expected to participate in combat, though larger groups such as Companies and Platoons (not Squads or Fireteams) usually fight farther back with their fireteam in order to be able to focus more attention to managing their men and coordinating with their logistics officers. The other men on their fire-team will usually serve as body-guards/logistics officers assiting the commander in the field. Commanders of Fireteams are a certain class but may be any class of the 5 and are picked due to their superior leadership qualities. The same goes for Squads and upwards, with a higher unit's commander usually being picked from exisiting sub-units. Higher units such as Companies also factor in that unit's fireteam and not just the commander, since the fireteam as a whole will be assiting him. With minimal numbers able to be fielded at any one time (The PPT cannot even field an entire Army most of the time), this seemingly inefficient system works quite well, as well as each commander knowing exactly how many troops they will have of what type if they ask for a Battallion or a Division, no matter which one it is. Mechanized support units are assigned based on the unit breakdown, some to a higher level and some to a lower level. While the units try their best to have these all available, the military simply cannot always have all this equipment available for each unit. (E.G. It cannot always have an IFV, 5 Single-person transports, an areial transport, and a truck available for every single Fireteam.)

<> Fireteam: 1x IFV (capacity of 1 Fireteam), 5x personal transports, 1x AIT (Air Infantry Transport), 1x Truck (HUMMVEE type vehicle, often opperated by the fireteam themselves instead of another driver/pilot)
<> Squad: 2x IFVs (capacity of 2 Fireteams each, usually Rekslos), 1x AIT (capacity of 1 Squad)
<> Platoon: 1x Combat Medic Squad, 2x Tanks, 1x Dropship, 5x LA/CAS (Low Altitude / Close Air Support) Craft
<> Company: 2x Fighters, 5x Bombers, 5x Artillery

The Army, including it's infnatry, support units, mechanized forces, logiscitcs, supplies, everything, are all stationed on Army run transports. These trasnports include their own weapons for self defense (no escorts), starfighter compliment, and holorooms large enough for large-scale traning operations, though the largest are found on space stations for truly massive holographic traning exercises. Special Forces units, including larger scale Delta Force type units and smaller more specialized SEAL type units are attached to each Army as seperated lower divisions. (EG. A Delta force like unit may be a Battallion in size, but are given equal grouping level of a Corps, reporting directly to the Army HQ

The Mechanized forces are divided based on vehicles and are more complicated than infantry organization. The Navy's organization is similarly organized based on ships, but is less rigid, as a squad-type unit may have a single supercruiser or two frigates or five light escorts or a battleship and two frigates. This is partially due to the fact that ships cannot be mass-produced and crewed quite like vehicles, and thus are not as easily organized. You just lump together what you have. Marines are like the army, but are more highly trained, organized differently (infantry and mechanized forces or not split), and they are stationed on the Navy's war-ships and not the Army's transports. They are primarly for ship-to-ship boarding or when a landing force is needed for planet-side operations, but coming from Navy ships and not Army transports. They are perfectly capable of waging a ground war just as effectively as teh Army, albeit in smaller numbers. Their main difference is that they usually only go planetside because for wahtever reason only a Navy ship is available to deploy troops and they are much better trained, being quite smaller in numbers. They are also occasionally used fortough spots that the Army cannot/doesn't want to deal with.

That's all for now, I'll add more later...once I write it all....which will probably be after I build more stuff to organize. Razz

Yeah, I didn't read most of it. But I'm about to post something very similar, so I won't blame anyone for not reading that, too. xD

Also, if you want people to read, you should post it in a normal font. That one scares people off. Razz

What? I think that font looks cooler. More military like IMO. Razz Unless it's military bearing is what scares people off. Razz

I like it! Like you said, I'm a sucker for organization, so I ate this up. Razz Well structured and thought-out, and I like how regular infantry also specialize in something of the support class.

However, I would like to ask how many troops are estimated to be in the Navy and Army, as I didn't see it in the post.

@RMM: It's closest to the font that's always used in military/spy movies when the date and location type out on the screen in green letters. Razz And yeah, it's like notepad. Razz

@kojan: I'm not entirely sure yet, but less than one army can be fielded, as you may or may not have seen. I'm still not sure quite ho many though, but atelast a Regiment.

You'd have to ask Lonewolfli and the SSF about snails, but last I heard he went inactive 2.5 years ago. Sad

Re-organization of the military is in progress; incorporating mechinzed forces and making the whole military more modular and thus more flexible. I should also be able to use the basic format to do the Marines as well, and I may even get the Navy in.
