Hammerhead Class Artillery Cruiser

on Sat Aug 16, 2014 3:54 am
~ Start Entry ~

(Hope you guys like this!  Just a little something I whipped up tonight!)

Realizing that His fleet was in need of escort ships with heavy firepower, Johnnyred designed the Hammerhead Class.  Armed with Four heavy Mass Drivers, this new ship can punch holes through the toughest of force fields and deflectors (Due in part to the fact that such defenses are weak against projectile based attack despite their strength against beam attacks)  However, this ship lacks in man power and other weapons outside of the Mass Drivers (Only having four shock cannons, and a few phaser banks and torpedo tubes.)  This ship is often accompanied by fighters and/or Rhode Island and Defiant Class starships to escort the escort.  They also often travel in the company of OMEGA Class Shield Ships to give them extra defense.  Because of the Mass Drivers, the primary energy output is to the weapons systems, and the ship has a weaker deflector dish.  It's also not able to keep speed with some of the bigger ships, leading these craft to either piggyback on ships capable of preforming such a manuever or utilizing a stargate to warp to location.

- Specifications -

Length: 275

Shocked Those cannons are gigantic. I really love it! How long did it actually take you to build it, in hours? The design is unique and the SNOT work is superb, as always.

My only *real* issue with the ship is it's stats 70 crewmembers for a 275-meter ship? 10 marines? I'd personally add twice that amount for both categories- but hey, it's your ship. Also, having warp 9 as it's cruising velocity, even if it isn't used, doesn't seem all that "slow" to me; that's the max speed of most ships (it also irritates the part of me that's bothered that every ship can do warp 9; max speed should be limited to the big ships only, IMHO). Other than that, though, it's a great ship!

Wow, excellent design! I love it! It looks heavily armored yet graceful and the mass drivers are superb. I like the antennae designs. Overall, awesome craft!

@Mighty Crew count does seem low to me to, also the crew categories add to a crew of 100. Razz (10 bridge + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 mass driver + 10 engineering + 10 space marines + 30 misc = 100, unless the mass drivers are counted in pairs? In which case the total would be 80.)

But warp 9 is actually pretty slow for a maximum speed. You see, warp 9.1 is MAAAAAAAANY times faster than warp 9. And warp 9.12 is MANY times faster than warp 9.1. Warp speed does not move in a simple, linear manner. It's almost exponential. And the fastest ships from the 2,370's were actually mid-sized. So I think it has more to do with the development of tech than it does the size (within reason. Tiny ships can't fit the better tech of mid-sized vessels.) Since most ships from several hundred years ago have a MAXIMUM speed of warp 9.5-9.9, I think this is perfectly reasonable.

@J-red. In my understanding, shields are more vulnerable to beams than to kinetic damage. (Although I have NO idea why torpedoes, the damage of which is explosive based, would be classified as kinetic.) So I think that against shields: super high velocity projectile weapons/particle weapons > normal beams > normal torpedoes. But I could be quite wrong.

Now to the build itself:

IMPRESSIVE! Very Happy I'm really more of a fan of your Trek style ships, just because it's what I'm used to, but this is pretty cool! The SNOT work is great, as always. Why we even need to tell you that your SNOT is great anymore, I really don't know as it's pretty much a given that J-red=top notch SNOT. Razz Those mass drivers are H-U-G-E!!!!!!!!! ESPECIALLY compared to the size of the ship itself! I wouldn't want this thing angry at me! Smile

I believe I already have a hammerhead class.

I L_O_V_E those impulse engines! The brick-built glow is just stunning! This is a very utilitarian ship, but it is still aesthetically pleasing. WELL done! I think I will nickname it "Space Tank" because that's pretty much what it is. Razz GREAT job!

True, but that doesn't change the fact that it irritates my OCD. Razz (My brain can't seem to understand the whole "exponential" thing, I think) Razz

Wow, that's a great ship, J-red! Good unorthodox design (something I almost always admire Wink ), and excellent SNOT work, detail, and weaponry. At first when I saw this I thought, "Those guns are too big." But then I realized that this ship is SUPPOSED to have huge weapons, at the expense of other features. So all in all, great work!

Wow, what scale is that built in?  Shocked  It reminds me of a starship-sized flying tank, which it probably is!

It's scary. Razz

@ Mighty - Yeah, I was tired and guesstimating as far as crew (I always have trouble with that. Razz) Dino is also right, most starships after TNG average over Warp 9.1 so the Hammerhead's average running speed is slow.

@ PXR - Danke! Very Happy

@ Dino - As far as shielding goes, I was just going off what I could tell from Star Trek Online. From what I could tell it looks like shielding was always weaker to projectiles and then armor weaker to phasers and lasers.

AS far as design goes, Danke! If you do have a Hammerhead, I can change the name easily. Razz I'm glad you like the impulse engines (It needs ones that big to push this heavy thing, a lot of the weight is ammo for the mass driver. XD) In case you hadn't noticed, I've also been using the same technique to add red to the deflectors.

The Mass Drivers when counted in the weapons systems are counted as four, but under crew they're counted as two, so each turret has 10 dudes. (Again, most of the space is wiring and ammo for the weapons.)

@ Scare - Danke! Glad you like it!

@ Talmid - Prefect Grade, as always. Razz (1 Stud = 10 Meters)
