[Combat Vehicle] CV-79 Squad Combat Vehicle

on Mon Sep 08, 2014 8:45 pm
The CV-79 SCV, or Squad Combat Vehicle, was designed as a replacement for the GT-38 Stalwart as it did not come with a standard armament - in fact it has no armament at all. Due to the inability to defend itself, and the high value of eliminating up to thirty troops in one vehicle, designers took on the ageless challenge of taking the lethal properties of a tank and the vulnerabilities of a carrier. Finally, they think they have something worthwhile:
CV-79 SCV:

As you can see, the SCV is heavily armed and armored, about the size of an MBT and using the only tread design I've gotten to work consistently same type of propulsion as the Ranger Heavy Tank and the Recon Cruiser Tank. It also borrows its ERA plating from the cruiser tank, and some of the elements of its turret are also related to the smaller vehicle's antiaircraft variant:
Recon Cruiser Tank (AA):
As for the interior, the SCV as the name implies carries a full thirteen-man Marine Squad, with three crewmen: one driver, one gunner, and one communications operator.

These crewers' functions are individual and unique, but require a high level of teamwork.
-The driver's role is simple: he moves the troops to the locations specified to him/her by the COMMOP. He operates the MG220 repeater in the front of the vehicle and if needed can take over the turret's weapons, usually the cannon and repeater.
-The gunner's role is equally obvious: they aim and fire the turret's weapons, either using general targeting data provided to them by their basic computers, or from the information given to them by the COMMOP from their parent unit's battlefield targeting computers, which provide detailed location data on hard targets appropriate for the SCV's weapons, or if the SCV is the nearest armored vehicle.
-The communications operator, or COMMOP, plays many roles: they give the driver the information for where to go, detailed targeting information to the gunner, and even use their own computers (wired through the targeting systems) to provide antiaircraft firing data to the gunner. Like the driver, the COMMOP can take over some of the turret's weaponry, namely the missiles.

Very nice! I look forward to more stats, and more info on the Recon Cruiser Tank (AA)

Great builds! Very Happy the CV-79 is a little bland, although well built, it could use some more greebling I think. But your (AA) recon tank is excellent in both design and detailing. Well done! Very Happy

I know the definition of greebling and have examples, but Dino this thing is cramped as it is, and for some reason LDD's hinge tool is stubborn about what it does and does not let me do with the turret. I had some more details and then things that worked at first, didn't.

That being said if you have any advice on what I could/should do for said greebling I'd be happy to hear it. But I kind of like the bland-ish look of the main body. Lets it be used as a ram without ruining anything. Razz

Also. What are specs, and how does one come up with them? I have never been able to do ground vehicle specs. Starships, fighters both star- and (exo-)atmospheric, and especially personal weapons I can do with little to no problem. Try to get me to come up with the specs for a ground vehicle beyond crew and weapons and I'm about as capable as a rock is at being a sponge.

What Dino said, basically. Razz

My one concern is the armaments. Though appropriate for some kind of MBT-esque vehicle, the impression I got was that this was some kind of IFV, and not the kind of thing used in frontline combat (I mean, I guess IFVs could/can be used as frontline vehicles, but not ideally). I honestly feel this thing is just too over-armed for it's role- all those guns aren't necessary and won't really be used much. Of course, it's possible I'm misreading/misremembering something, but I don't really think of it as a combat vehicle (if it is, the guns are fine; perhaps a bit excessive for an infantry support role, but I know that argument is falling on deaf ears. Razz)

Great design overall. I agree with Dino, but I love the cannon. Feels like it could use some kind of rotary cannons to defend the vehicle 360 degrees without rotating the main turret, but other than that, great model!

I like the turret as-is. I would add some cargo racks or something similar to the sloped part of the armor on the main body, partly for utility, and partly for aesthetics.

Specs.
The dimensions. One stud is about a foot at minifig scale (Assuming a fig is six feet tall in scale)
So you can measure the length, width, and height in feet/meters.
You can guesstimate a mass based on modern vehicles, and based on how advanced your vehicle is. (Futuristic alloys, composites, etc)
Speeds can be determined very much the same way as the mass. Guesstimate them.
With that, crew and passenger count, and existing weapons stats, you've got a complete set of specs. Very Happy

I think Supe already did calculations on minifig-scale; it's in one of his fighters.

Also, given improvements in armor weight and engine capability, I'd imagine even Mammoth-tank-esque behemoths from our era would be petty fast by today's standards.

EDIT: Fun fact: The portal news lists this as being created by me, when it was (obviously) by Jace. Razz

Deaf ears indeed. I see your point, but I did mean to say (if I didn't already) that this would be one of those vehicles that arrives and stays for the fight, and can/will directly engage in combat. Unlike the CV-37 MUV (the Humvee analogue) the SCV is meant to move and directly support units, while the MUV is a force extender and applicator with its high speeds and heavier weapons making it a hit-and-run/recon type of vehicle.

So, while the weapons may seem excessive, I might also point out that an undefended rolling box with a dozen troops in it makes a great target for enemy bombers or armored vehicles. Give that box a cannon and some missiles and suddenly that nice, defenseless target is almost as dangerous to you as you are to it. Twisted Evil

I was thinking about that myself, but I didn't want to do what I did with the Recon and put a twin cannon on the sides. I kind of like the "big box" that it looks to be, but maybe if I can get some of those on top of the treads where the sloped bricks are I'll check that out.

Cargo racks? Hmm. I like the idea, but the thing is that the cargo is usually inside the vehicle, rather than out of reach on the outside. But it's an idea, if only for looks.

Alright. If I ever decide to get off my bum to do that in addition to school (I just like playing with the models to be honest. Specs will come when I need them and then be updated in that database topic. But thank you nonetheless!

I'll see what I can do about letting you guys know about the stuff I updated in my almost literal never-ending modifying of my more recent models and even older ones. I figure eventually someday I'll be satisfied, get all the information in one place, show you guys, and then finally get to work on the Star Wars AU novel I've been wanting to write.

I never thought I'd say this to you, but if that *IS* the case, it could actually use with more guns. Razz Take off some missiles and add an extra HMG or two, and that'd be fine.

....of course, you're really busy, as you mentioned, but if you ever do modify this, know extra guns has my sanction. Razz

I know how you feel about perfecting past works, Jace. I know how you feel. I have half a dozen refits... *on the lab... back when there WAS a lab* of just one ship. And that's only what I actually uploaded.
