TAU-4 Towed Artillery Unit
Fri Sep 19, 2014 10:49 pm
The TAU-4 is a mid-ranged towed artillery magnetic acceleration cannon capable of firing an explosive projectile up to 27,000 meters. This unit is equipped with electronic targeting and aiming systems, which can network with the Theater Information Network (TIN) to provide very accurate fire over a long distance. In addition, the unit can be operated completely manually, though this necessarily results in a significant performance drop. The TAU-4 normally requires a crew of two, but if operated without electronic assistance a crew of four or five may be necessary. The unit is loaded with explosive rounds, each cartridge containing a battery with enough charge to fire that round. The TAU-4 is itself equipped with a battery to power the onboard targeting computers and aiming mechanisms. This battery can power the unit for up to twelve hours of constant use before it must be recharged or replaced. The unit can also be powered directly from a vehicle, if necessary.

Wow, that's really good! I love it! My one issue is that the barrel seems a bit short for long-range firepower; I'd guess it'd be more of a medium-range deal.

From ground level, assuming a viewing height of around 6 feet, the horizon is only 3.5 miles away. 27,000 meters is over 16 miles. This artillery piece can't angle more than maybe 20 degrees, which means the force required to send a heavy explosive projectile would either rip it to shreds and detonate the projectile, or send it shooting backwards, tearing a ditch in the ground and essentially dropping the live projectile straight down. Perhaps you meant 2700 meters? 1.6 miles is totally doable, and probably won't instantly destroy everything around it.

Um. See I was going to say a combination of what is above: it's a cool idea, but the mechanics and mathematics mean it's kind of...better at killing MSI guys instead of killing the guys the MSI wants dead.
That being said I do think it's interesting, and to me it looks like it could easily be a self-propelled design.

@SD and ARC
Good point. I think the design can be easily tweaked to allow for a larger angle of elevation; I'll do that at some point.

Even with a 45 degree angle (the ideal angle for distance), you still need to adjust that 27000 yards down. Essentially, you're hitting my school from our house, at 20ish degrees. That power at 45 degrees... well, you'd probably be hitting New York or something.
Obviously this would be different if this was firing self-propelled ammunition like rockets, but as ARC said, this will kill far more MSI troops than enemy troops, by which I mean it will immediately detonate all surrounding ammunition while wiping out every trooper within the blast radius. I'm fairly certain Jar-Jar Binks designed this weapon.

Similar modern-day indirect fire weapons can reach up to 22,400m with conventional ammunition and about the same angles of inclination. The barrel is fairly short, so I suppose I could move the maximum range down a bit, but with magnetic acceleration I think around 25,000m is perfectly reasonable.
