Constellation Class Cruiser

on Wed Mar 11, 2015 11:46 am
~ Start Entry ~

The Constellation-class starship was named in memory of the original USS Constellation, which was commanded by Commodore Matthew Decker and lost in battle against a Preserver created doomsday machine in 2267.

The first ship of this class, the USS Constellation NX-1974, was commissioned under experimental status in the year 2275. The Constellation was soon followed by the USS Sempach and the USS Speedwell, with construction beginning soon thereafter on the USS Stargazer and the USS Hathaway.

These ships were among the mainstay of Starfleet's exploratory and defense efforts through the early part of the 24th century, some commanded by the same captain for up to twenty years or more.

I think I already expressed what a great job you did, but just to be clear for the record, I LOVE this ship! It not only looks, but FEELS like the Constellation. My one suggestion would be to switch it's color to, I believe it's called "light grey"

See here's something that no one understands. White with dark gray is the Texas Rangers fleet color scheme. Razz

Ergo the colors of this ship and all the ships that I have made that are PCG ships.

Recolor it to a light grey and upload it as a sister ship.

Well, nice ship, J-red! Having never actually seen TNG, I can't speak to the model's accuracy, but I really like it by it's own merits.

Here's a reference picture for you.  Razz

I really, REALLY love how the Constellation has sensor suites on the bottom of the primary hull. It adds a nice bit of character to the ship.

Alright, now that I have something to compare the ship too I do have a criticism, the saucer needs to be a big thicker. Other than that, looks good, unless you could get the horizontal nacelle pylons thinner.

Good luck with each of those without...

A. Making the saucer too thick or all studded. I hate studs on my saucer.

B. Making the nacelle pylons too tall.

I like studs on my saucer, it means more room for weapons. Razz

Why look pretty when you can just be more deadly?...........Okay fine. Razz

Personally I actually like the way the studs look on some ships, especially some of the PCG's older ships

On some ships they look ok, but for the most part I don't like them. Also if you're really good, a well placed stud can look really good.

Or both, Razz I nice string of studs or alternating smooth/studs would look cool.

@ S-H - High praise coming from the legendary ghostly Star-Hunter. Razz

@ Ant - I think it's more like the exposed under-side of the plates I used. I think I can figure that one out to smooth it all out.

Okay, I have to ask again (And this looks REALLY nice) why do you all hate studs? You're using LEGO, for crying out loud, studs are why they work!

Re: Constellation Class Cruiser

@ Jace - I assume you're speaking to me...? Razz

I don't hate studs, far from it, I love them, however, they have their own rightful place. On some ships (IE Dino's, LT's, Mighty's, etc) can look quite good, however, in a ship done in SNOT method, they just don't look right for the most part, especially if the rest of the ship is smooth and there's a random spot somewhere that I couldn't get covered, or the brick undersides as seen here are sticking out like a sore thumb on an otherwise smooth nacelle design.

I'm all about aesthetics with my ship designs, and as I said above, I'm not against stud usage, in fact, a well place stud or brick underside (Razz) can give a nice greeble or weapons effect of some sort, in fact if you take a look at my Paladin, Andromeda, and Arondite, you'll see quite a few studs on the upper and lower deck plating. And on my boarding ship, the Aluminum Mallard, you'll see I've got sections where I purposefully left off plating or other parts or even layered studded plates to give the appearance or wear or damage on the ship.

All in all, I see studs as a tool to be used, not something to cover up. Which partially leads me to explain why I always work in SNOT. I work in SNOT because again, I find it more aesthetically pleasing than working in plates, and it gives the ship a smoother, rounder look. SNOT built ships typically have a sleeker and faster looking design which is exactly how a ST-verse ship would look. SW ships though tend to look better built with plates, bricks, and exposed studs in a standard to more advanced (using Technic or other methods to make angles) building style.
