Project Archangel

on Tue Aug 11, 2015 7:25 am
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my new flagship, the PCG Archangel. Unfortunately many of its systems are prototypes and remain classified, even to the members of the Council of the Phoenix. I'm working on getting them declassified, but until then... well, you'll just have to look. Be satisfied for now knowing that it carries really BIG guns.

(WARNING: Large pictures. Really quite enormous.)

Original topic for archive reasons:
This is the topic for my WIP flagship, the PCG Archangel. So far I have a nacelle concept, likely not the final design but I was just brainstorming.

I didn't get a chance to comment on this when you showed it to me last night, but this is pretty dang sweet. Very nice construction. Is the construction solid or hollow inside?

One complaint about it is the Warp Engine Field Grille (the blue part) It feels out of proportion with the size of the nacelle. Needs to be a bit wider, maybe four studs as opposed to two.

You mean {Project:Archangel}? Razz

Interesting nacelles... need to be longer, though, and as J-red said, blue part has to be thicker. Still, off to a strong start!

@J-red: it's hollow inside- even so, it's over 2k pieces at its current size.

I'll make a mental note to increase the length of the nacelles and the width of the warp field grill.

As I said, this is a concept nacelle and may not be the one I use on my final flagship. Razz

Good luck getting together a beast big enough that it can use such MASSIVE nacelles; but I look forward to seeing you try.

Looks very powerful and sturdy, I'm comment with suggestions, but they'be pretty-much already been said. Only thing would be to include a bussard collector at the front (the red glowy part of a nacelle,) other than that, this is NIIIICE! Well done!

He actually sent the picture to me originally in a text, and when he did, he did specify that he was going to add a Bussard Collector, that's why I didn't point that out. As to the length, it may or may not need it. It all depends on the ship itself.

You can't see it in this picture very well, but there actually ARE bussard collectors at the front of the nacelle. I'm not finished with the end caps anyway, I'm highly displeased with their current state and changing them is the first thing on my list.

EDIT: been working on my nacelle design, I'll have some high-quality photos later, but here's a teaser for now.

NOW it's looking real nice. Razz Still, this is huge. Before this project is finished, I expect to hear reports on the news of your computer going into nuclear meltdown and forcing the military to evacuate the state... Razz

Doesn't matter past a certain point, LDD itself isn't build for gaming, but people with good computers seem to be able to get into the tens of thousands of pieces.

Anyways, I like where this is going! I look forward to seeing the monster of a ship that these will propel.

I start work on the primary hull either this evening or tomorrow. Still not sure what I'm doing with it, but the wedge-shaped hull is a trademark favorite of mine, so I'll likely go with that...

Wow... you took that in a direction that I NEVER saw coming! It is cool, but my mind has to adjust from expectation to reality before I can say HOW cool. Nice work!

Re: Project Archangel

Hmm... very nice, certainly, though I'm somewhat concerned over the lack of detail on the sides and overall squarish shape; it just seems lacking, simple. It needs more to it; the triangle-saucer Talmid described would actually work quite nicely, though I'm not sure how you would implement that.

Solid work, but perhaps a bit barren. I'll withhold judgement until it's released.

Re: Project Archangel

It actually seems like a less-exotic, mainstream-ified Argo Mk.III now that I look more at it.  Here's a funky comparison:

This is project archangel:

Spoiler:

Crisp, clean, simple - gets the job done.

This is the Argo:

Spoiler:

hdapsldlksfeplbplbpl

I'll say in Project Archangel's current stage the simplicity gives it the same appeal as the Excelsior, Ambassador, and Galaxy Fed boats: Mass-producible and dependable, common sights across the PCG, with form following function and utilitarianism more than grace like in the aforementioned Fed boats, which is a good thing because that's what the PCG's going for: strong starships that do what the Feds don't.

Adding a saucer section would complete the Star Trek look, but as proven by all the other unorthodox styled ships out there, it probably doesn't need a saucer.  Looking forwards to the next step. Very Happy

Re: Project Archangel

My brain latched on to an idea and I just had to run with it. It's not what I was expecting either, honestly. Lol @Talmid, that Prometheus hull on the front... Razz

The lack of a saucer section... I was inspired by WWII battleships and the Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica (and, yes, the Argo as well) for the design, but there's another reason. The two cone shapes on the front are not just decoration, they're massive railguns/magnetic accelerators designed for penetrating shields, loaded with transphasic ammunition. They run basically the entire length of the ship, with stacked hangar bays on both sides.

As I said, though, I'm adding more detail to it. Don't worry, it'll look perfect when it's done.

I imagine the raised aircraft-carrier-like section is the command section / bridge? (essentially what a saucer section is on a combat ship) Like on an aircraft carrier.

HA! I KNEW those where giant cannons! Razz And that's why I didn't suggest adding a front saucer section, that, and she is your ship and she must be what her designer feels she should be.
