Bastion-class research vessel

on Wed Mar 09, 2016 9:48 am

The Bastion-class research vessel, one of the primary ships in the new Azure Fleet, is equipped with the latest in research and scientific technology, as well as some of the strongest shields and fastest engines available to the PCG. Its primary mission one of scientific discovery and development, it is lightly armed, relying rather on the ship's thick hull and advanced systems to avoid destruction. The powerful dual primary sensor arrays are capable of detecting the crew complement of a ship up to a quadrant away.

The ship's flattened shape reveals no weaknesses, with no exposed bridge and the warp nacelles tucked safely within the hull.

This is a really cool, and unique (within the PCG) ship/concept. This thing is really cool. It looks like a combination between a science based starbase, and a highly durable barge. Which, I believe, is exactly as you intended.
There's just one thing, a lack of bussard collectors. (I assume that the first picture is of the front of the craft?)
Anyways, well done. This thing has some great angles.

Bussard collectors are the vent-like protrusions on the bow of the ship. Just because they're not red doesn't mean they're not there!

*mumbles something about having already used the name Bastion before commenting on the ship...*

Interesting design, to be sure. It definitely has a very thick, sturdy look, which is good for a long-endurance civilian ship. in short, the model's good, but not fantastic; although there's nothing I really dislike about it particularly, there's nothing that bumps it up to the next level either.

In terms of fluff: while the whole "detecting the crew complement of a ship up to a quadrant away" thing is a bit iffy, I do like the idea of a dedicated PCG science vessel-- presumably to handle the more extreme/dangerous tasks the feds don't want to be involved in, or for PCG weapon-testing, or something of that nature. Interesting idea; looking forward to further expansion/iteration of the Azure Fleet concept.
