Lyra Class Corvette Empty Lyra Class Corvette

Mon Aug 18, 2014 9:05 am
The Lyra Class Corvette is a fairly small (well, by PXE standards anyway Razz) corvette in service with the PXE. Lyra's are very fast (compared to other capital ships) but lack maneuverability, thanks to the absence of maneuvering thrusters.

Its firepower is actually quite great for a ship its size, with the TMC-4's acting as the main heavy hitters. (these are also mounted on the Kalla) Though they might not be as powerful as a large scale ASM, they are capable of sustaining their fire for extremely large periods of time.

Spoiler:

The Lyra has a decent fighter complement, courtesy of the main hangar bay located in the center. Total fighter capacity of the Lyra is eight squadrons of fighters.

So yeah, got back into building ships, and tried my hand at a smaller one, per request of Dino and Mighty/Tetra. Didn't exactly get a length less than the Nirvo'Kor, but close enough. Razz

A question though, what do you think about its role thingy? Should it be formally called a corvette or a frigate or a destroyer? I know that my classifications system is a bit screwed up, mostly since I have to class ships based on their firepower as well as taking into account their dimensions. Missiles count for a lot more firepower than conventional weapons and the PXE's larger weapons overall (in terms of turrets) distorts it even further. The TMC-4's and 5's are very large, so yeah...

So maybe I should just class ships based on their conventional armaments, and not their more powerful weapons? Or just dimensions alone? Your thoughts?

So, try to enjoy...

Very nice! I like how it's basically "little ship, big guns". Razz The idea of mounting heavy cannons on a smaller ship seems like a good one, and the design itself is fantastic as always.

I personally feel assigning role based on dimensions and then capability/equipment is generally best, but that's just me. Only counting conventional weaponry sounds like a good idea IMO.

@Tetra: Thank you!

Okay, I'll do it that way then, anyway, it makes it easier for me to assign roles to ships. Razz

Seriously? corvette? Razz This looks like at least a frigate to me. Great ship design! But if you're going to call it a corvette, add some thrusters! Razz Great ship design as always! Very Happy

Classification. I would take into account all of the above (weapons, size, specialized weapons) and classify it based on all of it. BUT if the ship has a lot of big/specialized weapons, add an "advanced" or "heavy/ultra heavy" or some other addition to its designation that clarifies its power, without making a tiny ship a cruiser or a giant ship a frigate.

@Dino: Thanks! Lol, I'll think about it. Razz

And thank you for your suggestions. I'm still thinking about your and Mighty's suggestions, but I'll definitely take your idea into account. Thanks. Smile
