The Generations Class was first introduced in the late 25th Century as the Federation's answer to various border disputes and all out wars going on at the time.  Its point of origin was a secret lab in the Kuiper Belt, where under the watchful eye of Star Fleet Tactical, five Generations Class Cruisers rolled out, (or more accurately, flew out) ready for combat.

For the next fifty years or so, these first generation Cruisers actually, well, fell short of their expected, well, successful-ness.  They were clunky and had a few too many warp nacelles, and also were not the most structurally rigid.  Most were given the roles of research and exploration vessels, because of their ability to maintain long term travel into the far reaches of deep space (or enemy space, as was originally planned) and back without refueling, and because of their all around, uh, all around-ness.

Within that period of time, five more first generation Cruisers were built, while at the same time, Admirals at Star Fleet Tactical were considering disbanding the Generations project.  Thankfully, some engineers working at another secret lab in the Alpha Centuari systems took notice of the class's plight, and convinced everyone they could make it better.

After acquiring the USS Generations, the USS Consolation B, and the USS Savior, the Alpha Centauri engineers began retrofitting these first generation Cruisers into second generation Battlecruisers.  The first thing they did was add

Structural rigidity was also improved, as were fuel efficiency and top speed, thanks to supplying the warp core with a healthier (but more costlier) diet over regular dilithium.

The Battlecruisers were definitely more fit for battle than their predecessors, and for the rest of their Generation fulfilled their roles well.

By the time the first half of the 26th Century rolled around, and stronger, faster, and more advanced vessels had taken over the Generations Class's place, Star Fleet decided they still had a use for the Class, and again ordered a refit of surviving vessels.

These third generation Generations Class vessels were refitted with the intention of being long term exploration, research, and science vessels.  However, because of the legacy carried behind them, the most Star Fleet could do to honor the veteran starship was to give it the designation of "Escort."
